Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who begins his four-day visit to the northeast Saturday, said he is "eagerly looking forward to the trip and interacting with the people".

"Later today (Saturday), I would embark on my visit to the northeast. I am eagerly looking forward to being there and interacting with the people," he said in a tweet.

Modi will be spending four busy days on his maiden visit to the northeast after assuming charge as the prime minister.

During the visit, he will address the country's top police chiefs in Guwahati, dedicate a train line from Assam to Meghalaya, commission a power project in Tripura and inaugurate a festival each in Nagaland and Manipur.

"I would visit Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Nagaland and attend a wide range of programmes that would connect me to all sections of society," Modi said in another tweet.

He said India would not develop till the northeast develops and youth of northeast has potential to play a key role in the development journey.

"Rich natural resources combined with talent of our youth gives our northeast the potential to play a key role in our development journey," the prime minister said.

"India will not develop till the northeast develops. We are committed to realising the potential of the northeast and accelerating its progress."
