The number of deaths from the earthquake, which shook Ecuador on April 16, has risen to 646, with 12,499 injured, President Rafael Correa stated on Saturday.
In a televised interview, the president added that another 130 people are missing and 26,091 remain in shelters.
Correa explained that, a week on from the worst earthquake to hit the country in 70 years, "the pain was immense" and expressed his hope would be maintained nationwide to help overcome these difficult times.
After expressing his solidarity for the families and thanking shows of international support, Correa emphasized that efforts were only just beginning.
"The families of the deceased and injured will count on all our support at any moment. We will do all we can to accompany them in overcoming these critical moments for the country," he expressed.
