Fake policemen held for extortion bid from married couple

Two men, masquerading as policemen, have been arrested on charges of trying to extort money from a married couple in Delhi's Japanese Park by threatening to defame them, police said on Tuesday.

Amar Singh, 34, and Rupender, 26, were arrested on Sunday for harassing and demanding money from a couple sitting inside the park in west Delhi's Rohini area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikramjit Singh said the man had gone to the Japanese park with his wife.

"The couple was talking when the two accused in plain clothes approached them and informed them that they were police officers," the official said, adding the accused then started making inquiries about the couple's identity and their purpose in visiting the park.

"They later demanded Rs.2,000 from the couple for letting them go otherwise they would arrest them in a false case and defame the woman," the official said.

The DCP said the accused were arrested from the spot after the couple noticed sub-inspector Shyam Singh and constable Dharam Vir passing by from there and sought their help.

"The accused are being questioned but we are yet to get information about their involvement in other such cases," DCP Singh added.
