Two suspected female suicide bombers blew up themselves while attempting to invade Maiduguri, capital of Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, to cause havoc, local police said on Monday.
The bombers were halted for routine security check on Sunday at a village on the outskirts of Maiduguri, Borno State police spokesman Victor Isuku told Xinhua.
According to Isuku, one of the bombers detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strapped to her body, killing her and her accomplice, whose IED vest did not get detonated.
The spokesman said three residents of the area were injured in the incident.
He said police rushed to the scene to render the unexploded IED safe and that the area is now being secured.
