Five children aged between 10 and 12 years were drowned in a pit near a canal in Rajasthan Thursday, police said.
According to the police the incident took place in Baran, some 300 km from Jaipur.
The deceased, identified as Kuldeep,10, Pramod, 11, Seema, 9, Shivani 12, and Jamyanti 10, were on their way to the canal to go swimming there, when they saw a pit near the canal and decided to swim in it.
"It (the pit)) was about 15 feet deep. They were drowned," said a police officer.
The officer said that some passers-by saw the children's clothes lying scattered outside and informed police.
"Rescue teams of the district administration fished out the bodies. The bodies have been handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination," said the officer.
