Defence production secretary G. Mohan Kumar was on Friday appointed the new defence secretary for two years, an official statement said.
Mohan Kumar, who hails from Kerala, is an 1979 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Odisha cadre.
Ashok Kumar Gupta, a 1981 batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, who is special secretary, defence production, will be the new defence production secretary, said an order from the department of personnel and training.
Mohan Kumar replaces R.K. Mathur, who retires May 28. He has served in commerce, water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation ministries between 2010 and 2013.
He was steel secretary before taking over as defence production secretary on September 1, 2014.
