Ghaziabad rape victim gave wrong account, say police

The information provided by a gang rape victim was found to be factually incorrect and intended to implicate the enemies of the real rapist, Ghaziabad police said Thursday.

Superintendent of Police Shiv Hari Meena said police probed the account thoroughly as the victim was found to be frequently changing her statements to the investigation team and zeroed in on the real culprits.

It was found that the girl was raped but not by those people who were named in the First Information Report (FIR), police said.

The victim had told police that she was kidnapped by a junior engineer working with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd and taken to an abandoned house in Loni town where three people, including the engineer, a builder and a contractor gang-raped her after drugging her.

Later, they dumped her along a road in Govindpuram area, the victim said.

Acting on the victim's complaint, police took her to hospital and began a probe.

During investigation, police found that another person - a journalist named Shahzad - raped her and then forced her to name his enemies for the crime. Initially, the girl did not agree to help him but later she agreed and gave a false account to police.

Meanwhile, the people who were named in the FIR, lodged a police complaint for being falsely implicated in the case.

"We are studying all the aspects of the case and have arrested Shahzad and another journalist named Vignesh Sharma. The statement of the victim is being recorded," Meena said.
