Officials of the anti-graft wing of Goa Police are in Kerala to probe the assets of Congress legislator Chandrakant Kavlekar who allegedly bought properties worth over Rs.5 crore in that state, an official said Wednesday.
The officials of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) were probing the assets of Kavlekar who was accused of graft during his stint as chairman of the Goa Industries Development Corporation (GIDC). He reportedly purchased 12 properties in Kerala for prices ranging from Rs.26 lakh to Rs.2.3 crore.
"Some of the properties were in Mr. Kavlekar's name too," the official said. He was incidentally quizzed for over six hours by another team of ACB sleuths at the agency's Panaji office Monday.
"We were trying to establish our case of disproportionate assets against him. We had a list of questions which we asked him as part of our enquiries," Superintendent of Police (ACB) Bosco George said.
Kavlekar, speaking to IANS, said he had fully co-operated with the ACB adding that all his "finances and paperwork related to the properties is in order".
Kavlekar was accused by the Goa Small Industries Association of committing large scale irregularities related to allotment of industrial plots when he was GIDC chairman.
A government-appointed committee in 2012 also confirmed the allegations.
