Gros Islet (St. Lucia), Sep 13 (IANS/CMC) Guyana left-hander Leon Johnson is in line for his share of history in more ways than one, if he makes his debut against Bangladesh in the second cricket Test starting here Saturday.
The 27-year-old, called up to replace veteran Chris Gayle in the squad, could become the 300th West Indies Test player in the regional side's 500th Test, since their first match back in 1928, reports CMC.
Captain Denesh Ramdin Friday night said it was important that Johnson capitalise on the opportunity to perform once selected.
"He's a young left-handed batsman who has been doing really well in the last couple of A team tours we've had," said Ramdin.
"Chris Gayle is not here but we have other players who can fill the gap, not to hit the ball as hard as him but to go out there and get the opportunity for themselves to settle down and bat."
"I think as a player coming in it doesn't matter what number you have to bat, once you get that opportunity you should relish that opportunity to play for the West Indies."
Johnson has been on the verge of selection for some time but has failed to break in to the final the West Indies eleven.
He hit four half-centuries against Bangladesh A when they toured the Caribbean earlier this year, compiling 235 runs in the two four-day "Tests" at an average of 78.
