Peter James Pyngrope Hanaman, a 1979 batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was Friday appointed Meghalaya's police chief, an official said.

Hanaman, who was additional secretary in the cabinet secretariat in New Delhi, replaces acting Director General of Police Sunil Kumar Jain. He is expected to join office Monday.

A home department official said Hanaman was selected by the State Security Commission, headed by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, from a panel of five senior IPS officers of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

"The commission selected Hanaman as he was found to be the fittest man for the pivotal post," the official told IANS.

The list included Kulbir Krishan (1976 batch), who is currently the director general, civil defence and home guards, Subhas Goswami (1977 batch), incumbent Assam DGP Jayanta Narayan Choudhury (1978 batch) and D.K. Pathak (1979 batch besides Hanaman.
