Haryana proposes policy for treated water

The Haryana government will soon come out with a policy for re-using treated water to stop the wastage of millions of litres of water, an official said on Wednesday.

"The policy will be formulated especially for the bulk consumers like thermal plants, industries, agriculture, horticulture etc. to save water to the maximum," Minister of State for Public Health Engineering Banwari Lal told media here.

He said that 1,200-1,300 MLD (million litres per day) of water was being treated in the state Seweage Treatment Plants (STPs) out of which only 30-50 MLD water is reused.

"The remaining goes down the drain. The policy will aim at utilizing this water, instead of allowing it to flow waste," the Minister said.

He said there are 115 STPs in operation in Haryana presently and work is on to set up 20 more.

"In 71 cities of Haryana, over 135 litres per capita per day (LPCD) water is being supplied, whereas in 11 cities it is 110 to 135 LPCD and in four cities it is 70 to 110 LPCD of water," he said.

The Minister said that out of the 7,517 habitations in the state, 6,043 are being supplied 100 per cent water, 1,135 are getting 75 to 100 per cent, 199 are getting 50 to 75 per cent and in 34, 25 to 50 per cent water is being supplied.
