The CPI-M Wednesday urged the central and Chhattisgarh governments to work out "an effective strategy" to fight the Maoists who killed 16 people in the state.

Condemning the massacre Tuesday in Sukma district, it said: "This brazen ambush in a region which has seen repeated Maoist attacks highlights the inadequacies of the security strategy meant to deal with the Maoist violence.

"It is imperative that the central and the state governments together work out an effective strategy to counter the Maoist armed groups," said the Communist Party of India-Marxist.

Some 200 Maoist guerrillas ambushed and killed 11 CRPF personnel, four policemen and a civilian in one of the worst such attacks in Chhattisgarh in recent times.
