A man, who underwent a heart transplant said to be the first such human-to-human surgery in eastern India, is stable, the hospital said on Tuesday.

Dilchand Singh, 39, has been taken off assisted ventilation, said a medical bulletin.

"Our transplant recipient is stable and continues to progress well," Fortis Hospital Medical Superintendent Arafat Faisal said in the bulletin.

"All medical parameters are satisfactory. His relatives have visited him and have been updated," the bulletin said.

According to the bulletin, the patient is alert. He has been able to consume normal food and water.

His condition will be monitored for another 72-96 hours.

The kin of Singh, who hails from Jharkhand, feel the family of the donor, a 21-year-old who died in Bengaluru, has given a new lease of life to him.

"Once we are out of the hospital, we will visit the donor's family. We will be connected with the family till the time we are alive," a relative said.
