Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Thursday asked power distribution companies to improve consumer services.

"There is a need for power discoms to bring more improvement in their consumer services," Dikshit said as she asserted that the power sector has witnessed a sea-change since 1998 - the year in which Congress came to power in the state.

Recently, the government had warned power discoms of punitive action if long power outages in the capital continued.

Besides, a three-member committee was also set up to suggest measures for reforms in the power sector.

In the election year, allegedly inflated electricity bills have become a political issue.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Adami Party (AAP) have alleged gross irregularities in power sector and collusion between the Delhi government and private power distribution companies.

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission had July 26 hiked the power tariff in the capital by five percent. However, the Congress government, set to face assembly polls in November, quickly announced that it will provide concessions to households consuming up to 400 units.
