A major Japanese real estate company has planned to construct a 390-metre high skyscraper in central Tokyo which will be the country's tallest building, the media reported.

Mitsubishi Estate unveiled the project at a news conference on Monday, state-run NHK news agency reported.

Mitsubishi Estate President Hirotaka Sugiyama said the skyscraper will raise the city's international profile.

The company will re-develop a 3.1-hectare area near JR Tokyo Station to construct 3 buildings.

One of them will soar 390 metres high with 61 stories above and five below the ground. It will be the tallest building in the country, surpassing the 300-metre Abeno Harukas skyscraper in Osaka, western Japan.

The project will take about 12 years to complete. It is set to be finished by March of 2028, the company announced.

The tower will house commercial facilities and offices. Mitsubishi Estate also plans to build a 7,000 square-metre plaza in the complex suitable for big events.

It intends to make it an international hub of financial business by inviting foreign firms to move in.

The company says the total cost of the project is estimated to be over 1 trillion yen

($8 billion).
