Do you know which set of professionals forms the largest, most active verified group on Twitter? Journalists, of course!
The sad part, however, is that they have relatively few followers (140,000 on average) compared to musicians (more than 1.2 million on average).
According to a new report based on 15,000 verified Twitter accounts, scribes make up nearly a quarter -- 24.6 percent -- of the authenticated Twitter users.
The next largest category is sports teams and athletes (17.9 percent) followed by actors and entertainers (13.6 percent), said a report by Britain-based start-up Triggertrap published on medium.com.
According to Haje Jan Kamps, CEO of Triggertrap, news organisations and journalists tweet frequently about the content they produce and consume.
"Verified journalists follow more users on average compared to other verified groups in the Twitterverse," the report added.
Recently, in a storm of tweets, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey celebrated the social network's ninth birthday by thanking reporters and editors who helped turn the micro-blogging site from a stream of 140-character updates to a river of news and commentary.
"So many around the world have helped make Twitter what it is, but there's one group I'd like to thank today: journalists," he had tweeted earlier this month.
"After the tech early-adopters, journalists were the next to take to Twitter. They used it as a source, to break news, and to link their work," he added.
