Kejriwal's 'jungle raj' remark wrong: Bassi

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Sunday termed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's "jungle raj" comment "an attempt at political positioning that deserves no importance".

"There's no 'jungle raj' (lawlessness) in Delhi. If such a thing has been said, it is definitely wrong. It may be due to lack of knowledge or insight into the crime situation (in the national capital)," Bassi told reporters here.

The statement had no connection with reality, said Bassi, who earlier opposed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's demand to hand over Delhi Police control to the state government.

"...or an attempt at political positioning, as political parties often do that. These should not be given much importance," he said.

The latest slugfest between the AAP government and the Centre was triggered in the wake of the rape of two minors in the national capital.

Following a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, Kejriwal on Sunday said that "jungle raj" prevailed in the capital, which was a matter of "deep concern".

"Around 31,000 cases of crime against women were recorded but chargesheets were filed in only 13,000 cases. In 18,000 cases, there are no charge sheets. Only 146 people have been punished overall; so you can see how safe our women are," Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal also scoffed at 'Himmat App' launched by the Delhi Police and said that only 13 of the 4,000 cases that came under the purview of this initiative were properly addressed.
