Aimed at highlighting the rising crime against women in West Bengal, 16 mass organisations of Left parties will take a 130-km cycle rally in the state beginning Dec 12.

Organised by the youth, students and women organisations of the Left parties, the rally will begin at Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas district and end two days later at Kamduni in North 24 Parganas.

While a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped and killed in Kakdwip in November, the rape and murder of a college student in Kamduni in 2013 had ignited widespread outrage.

"Both Kakdwip and Kamduni are glaring examples of the state's pathetic status on women security. Since the Mamata Banerjee government came to power, crime against women has been rising alarmingly," said Minati Ghosh of the All India Democratic Women's Association, a CPI-M affiliate.

She quoted National Crime Records Bureau data to buttress her claims that West Bengal was among the leading states for rape and crimes against women.
