Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh was on Wednesday appointed as chief of the Indian Army's Northern Command and will take over the post on Friday, a defence release said.
Currently, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Information Systems and Training, he replaces Lt. Gen. Devraj Anbu who has been appointed as the Vice Chief of the Army.
It was Singh, who as Director General Military Operations, announced in September 2016 that the Indian Army had carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control in Pakistan-administered territory.
Hailing from Punjab's Jalandhar district and an alumnus of Kapurthala Sainik School and Indian Military Academy, Singh was commissioned in the Dogra Regiment, and is considered an expert in counter-insurgency operations.
