In an embarrassment to the BJP in Maharashtra, a former woman office bearer of the party has accused senior leader Madhu Chavan of raping her for the last two decades, police said Wednesday.
"We have taken cognizance of a complaint by a woman who said she had been raped since 1993. We are investigating the matter further," Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni told media persons Wednesday evening.
Despite repeated attempts, top Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in the state were not available for their comments in the matter.
The woman, a former office-bearer of the BJP's women's wing in the city has alleged that Chavan sexually assaulted her since the past two decades on the pretext of marrying her.
A case has been registered at the Kala Chowky police station in south Mumbai. Chavan has not yet been summoned for interrogation or detained in the matter.
