A man was arrested Friday in Odisha's Cuttack district for allegedly attempting to kill a deaf and dumb girl after raping her, police said.
The incident took place near Bhauria village, about 35 km from Bhubaneswar Thursday evening but only came to light after a relative of the victim lodged a police complaint Friday.
According to police officer Debadutta Barla, the incident took place when the 24-year-old woman was returning home from a village. Finding her alone, the 25-year-old accused dragged her to a secluded place and raped her.
Although the offender subsequently attempted to kill her, she however managed to escape.
Police started investigation on the basis of the complaint lodged by one of victim's relatives. The accused was arrested and has confessed to the crime, Barla said.
