A man has been arrested for fabricating a kidnapping of his 10-year-old son to divert the attention of his relatives who were demanding the money he had borrowed from them, police said on Wednesday.

Mohd. Ayub, 40, was arrested from his residence in Dilshad Garden in east Delhi on Tuesday.

His nephew Tajim, 25, who was also involved in the crime, managed to escape when police reached Umri Kalan village in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh to recover Ayub's son Mohd. Aman alias Kaif.

Police said Ayub sent his son with his nephew to Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh on April 12 and made a call to the Police Control Room (PCR), saying his son has been kidnapped.

Meanwhile, Ayub's nephew shifted Ayub's son to Umri Kalan village from where he was rescued.

"Ayub did it to divert the attention of his relatives who were demanding around Rs.6-7 lakh that he had borrowed from them. He also did not inform his wife about his plan," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajit Kumar Singla told IANS.

Ayub, a scrap dealer, filed a formal complaint at Seema Puri police station about the kidnapping of his son.

"He also made a ransom call demanding Rs.7 lakh from his wife. The call was made to his wife's mobile number on April 17, five days after the kidnapping."

"He conveyed the same message to police," the officer said.

After analysing the SIM card details of the phone number used to make the ransom call, police cracked the case and arrested Ayub.

The officer said the same mobile number was used to made a few calls to scrap dealer Mehandi Hassan, a resident of Dilshad Garden, to trap him in the kidnapping case as Ayub wanted to take revenge over some dispute.
