A young woman was shot dead by her brother and then burnt in Aligarh town in Uttar Pradesh for eloping with her lover, police said Tuesday.
The incident took place Monday in Sabhapur village of Khair region in Aligarh.
The woman some time back eloped with her lover, and returned to her parents Monday to patch up the broken relationship with them.
The brother, a former village head, talked to her and once the woman was inside the house, he shot her and then set her on fire.
The smoke billowing from the house raised suspicion and neighbours informed police.
When police reached the house, there was no one inside tghe house and they found the half-burnt body of the woman in a room.
Police have sent the body for autopsy while a manhunt has been launched to nab the assailant, identified as Bhola, officials told IANS.
The lover of the woman named her family as the accused in his police complaint.
