An elderly man, later found to be mentally challenged, made an unsuccessful attempt on Monday to snatch a paramilitary trooper's rifle in Anantnag town in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Police said the man, in his 70s, tried to snatch the firearm from a Central Reserve Police Force trooper but was overpowered by other security personnel.

The man was later found to be mentally challenged and allowed to go home, the police said.

Snatching of firearms has become a major challenge to security forces, especially in south Kashmir areas where around a dozen such incidents have occurred.
