The first woman Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Manjula Chellur, has been named the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
The transfer of Chellur, who will be the second woman Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, is expected to take effect later in August.
Justice Sujata Manohar became the first woman Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in 1994.
According to a notification by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, Justice Girish Chandra Gupta, the seniormost judge of the Calcutta High Court, will function as the Chief Justice in the interim.
Chellur took over as the first woman and overall the 37th Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court in August 2014.
Starting her career as an advocate in Bellary, Chellur went on to become the first female judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2000.
