Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday condoled the deaths of 22 pilgrims who were killed when the van they were travelling in fell into the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh.

"Loss of lives due to a bus accident in East Godavari district, AP (Andhra Pradesh) is saddening and unfortunate. My deepest condolences," he tweeted.

The accident took place near Rajahmundry town when the vehicle veered off the road and fell off Dowleswaram barrage in the early hours of Saturday.

The victims, including nine women and six children, were from Achutapuram village of Visakhapatnam district. They were returning home after a pilgrimage to Tirupati.
