The mortal remains of Subedar Kanwar Pal Singh of Bhondsi village here who attained martyrdom in South Sudan were consigned to flames Monday with full military and state honours amidst slogans extolling his bravery, an official said.
Hundreds of people from Bhondsi and nearby villages took part in the last journey. Subedar Kanwar Pal Singh, 46, achieved martyrdom Dec 19 while fighting terrorists in Akobo of South Sudan as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force deployed there.
Zila Sainik Board Secretary Wing Commander K.K. Yadav (retd) and others laid wreaths on the body of the martyr, which was draped in the tricolour.
He is survived by wife Asnee Lata, daughter Anjali (19) and son Kunal (13).
They said Dec 19, Kanwar Pal Singh (Army Medical Corps) and Subedar Dharmesh Sangwan (8 Rajputana Rifles) of Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, died of injuries sustained in an attack by tribals.
Sangwan was part of the Indian rowing team that won silver in rowing at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.
The martyr's father, Kanhaiya Singh, and mother, Moorti Devi, were waiting for their son to return Jan 10 but fate had destined otherwise. However, they said they felt proud of their son's martyrdom.
