Muslim clerics in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme's decision to revive the trial against senior BJP leaders L.K. Advani, M.M. Joshi, Uma Bharti and Vinay Katiyar for conspiracy to raze the Babri mosque in Ayodhya.

Eminent cleric Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali said the faith of the Muslim community has been further reinforced by the decision of the apex court.

"It is the right of the country to know what conspiracy was hatched and by whom to demolish the mosque in Ayodhya in 1992," he said while also welcoming that the apex court had set a time frame of two years to complete hearings on the matter.

One of the sides in the disputed site's litigation, the Sunni Central Waqf Board has also welcomed the decision. Babri Mosque Action Committee's Convener Zafaryab Jilani said that the decision was a "welcome one" that would "increase the faith of the common people in the judiciary".

He also added that had the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) gone to the apex court earlier, a decision would have come much earlier.

Pointing out that now that the SC was monitoring the case, even the premier investigating agency would not be able to do anything wrong now in the matter, Jilani said that questions should also as to why the CBI delayed this action for so long.
