The National Floor Level Minimum Wage (NFLMW) has been increased to Rs. 160 per day from the existing Rs. 137 effective from July 1 this year, union Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said on Tuesday.

"While reviewing the movement of CPI-IW (Consumer Price Index Numbers for Industrial Workers) during April 2014 to March 2015 over the period April 2012 to March 2013, it was observed that the average CPI-IW has risen from 215.17 to 250.83," said Dattatreya in a statement .

The rise in CPI-IW prompted the government to hike the NFLMW, he said, adding he had written to all the chief ministers and local governments to take necessary steps in its implementation.

In the letter, he has also emphasised to ensure implementation of various provisions of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 so that the objective of ensuring the minimum wages to workers is fulfilled.

The NFLMW was last revised from Rs.115 to Rs.137 per day in July 2013.
