NCPCR summons Jharkhand officials over forced sterilisation

India's child rights panel has summoned officials of the Jharkhand government in connection with the forced sterilisation of a male adolescent child.

The officials, including the state's Principal Secretary (Health) K. Vidyasagar, were summoned by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) for non-compliance of directions pertaining to child rights.

The officials are charged with non-compliance with directions made by the commission on Nov 8, 2012 to report to it the circumstances under which an illegal sterilization surgery was conducted on a male adolescent child from village Kanke in the state.

The commission directed the officials to locate the victim and apprise it of his well-being.

It also directed for reversal of vasectomy on him, while the state government was also directed to take decision for payment of compensation.

The commission has recommended disciplinary proceedings against the officers responsible for this act. Compliance of the directions of the commission has been sought within 30 days time.
