The United Nations said here Monday that a total of 1,375 Iraqis were killed and another 2,240 were wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in January, Xinhua reported.

Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesman, made the statement at a daily news briefing here, citing latest casualty figures released by the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

"The number of civilians killed was 790 and the number of civilians injured, 1,469," Dujarric said. "Baghdad was the worst impacted Governorate, with 1,014 civilian casualties."

The security situation in Iraq has drastically deteriorated since June, when bloody clashes broke out between Iraqi security forces and the Islamic State (IS) militants.

The militants took control of the country's northern city of Mosul and later seized swathes of territories after Iraqi security forces abandoned their posts in Nineveh and other predominantly Sunni provinces.

Earlier, a UN report said that 2014 witnessed some of the worst violence in years, leaving at least 12,282 civilians dead and 23,126 others injured, making it the deadliest year since the flare-up of sectarian violence in 2006-2007.
