India has limited facilities to produce apparel grade wool which makes it dependent on importing the wool, said Mridula Jain, the Chairperson of the Shawl Club of India, at the ongoing Textiles India 2017 here. She also feels that it's important to educate consumers on the originality and quality of wool.
Jain, also the Managing Director of design house Shingora Textiles Ltd. shared her thoughts on the 'Productivity and Marketing Constraints in Wool Sector', at the traders round table session on day two of Textiles India 2017, the first-of-its kind mega trade event in Gujarat.
The event, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, is the first ever B2B exhibition focusing on fibre to fabric and fabric to fashion.
The round table on 'Productivity and Marketing Constraints in Wool Sector', highlighted the fact that the total wool production in India is not enough to meet the demand of the wool industry. The major chunk of wool produced in India is of coarse quality and is mostly used in the handmade carpet industry.
"India has limited facilities to produce apparel grade wool which makes it dependent on importing the wool. The need of the hour is to develop research facilities that can produce exceptional wool and also make the product competitive in the international market.
"We also need to educate the consumers on the originality and quality of the wool. This can only be achieved by making the content labels on shawls and clothing products mandatory," said Jain.
"We are delighted to be a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani's vision of putting India on the global map of the textile sector. This event will open multiple avenues for the textile companies and traders and showcase the nations as sourcing and investing hub in the international market", she added.
Shingora Textiles Ltd. is a manufacturer and exporter of shawls, pocket squares, scarves, throws and fabrics - based out of Ludhiana with a sprawling space dedicated to weaving of fashion and decorative fabrics.
