Vatican City, June 19 (IANS/AKI) Pope Francis on Monday drew inspiration from 17th-century English metaphysical poet and cleric John Donne, tweeting: "None of us is an island".

"None of us is an island, autonomous and independent from others," read the tweet on his nine-language @pontifex account, which has over 30 million followers.

"We can only build the future by standing together, including everyone," the tweet went on.

In Meditation #17 of his 1623 prose work Devotions upon Emergent Occasions, Donne famously wrote: "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main."

The "no man is an island" quotation has since become one of the best-known in the English-speaking world.
