BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli on Tuesday exuded confidence that a non-Congress government will be formed in Meghalaya after the assembly elections next year.

"A non-Congress government is a certainty as of today as we assess the situation. Now the only question is who is going to be in that non-Congress government and how many seats those parties will secure," Kohli told journalists.

"I do not think that the Congress party pitch anywhere shows that they are going to win the third term in Meghalaya," Kohli said.

Election to the 60-member state assembly is scheduled to be held in February-March 2018.

Accompanying his party national general secretary (organization) Ram Lal to assess the BJP's poll preparedness in the state, Kohli claimed that the ruling Congress party in the state is on the verge of collapsing on its own due to "internal rumblings".

"They (Congress legislators) do not want to be where they are since it (Congress) is a sinking boat. Many legislators are in touch with the BJP," he said.

He also cited that the sacking of two Congress ministers - Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar -- saying it speaks volumes of how shaky things are in the Congress.

"The Congress-led government in Meghalaya only knows how to play politics without any development. But common people want development not politics," Kohli said.

Noting that every election in the Northeast has its own unique aspect, the BJP leader said, "The situation in Meghalaya will be totally different compared to Assam or Manipur. Therefore, the BJP will formulate a totally different strategy for the election in Meghalaya."
