Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah have spoken to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the police action against students agitating on the BHU campus, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday adding that the state government will find an appropriate solution to the issue.
Gadkari, the Road and Transport Minister, told reporters here that an inquiry is being conducted into the incident.
"The Prime Minister and the party chief have spoken to the Chief Minister. The incident is unfortunate. We express our pain. The state government will find a solution," the BJP leader said.
He said the party was committed to ensuring dignity and respect of women and any opinion should not be formed on the basis of any isolated incident.
Tension prevailed at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday after an agitation by woman students protesting molestation of a student turned violent late on Saturday when police used force to disperse the protestors.
Additional police has been deployed on the campus as a precautionary measure after police carried out a baton-charge and fired in the air on Saturday night while the students threw stones in retaliation. The university has been shut till October 2.
The students of BHU's Triveni hostel have been protesting at a university gate since Friday against the BHU administration's inaction after a student alleged that she was molested on the campus on Thursday.
