Procession in Tripura to celebrate Bangladesh transforming from LDC to developing nation

A colourful procession was taken out here on Wednesday to celebrate a UN body categorising Bangladesh as a developing nation from a least developed country (LDC).

Intellectuals, academics, social activists, artists, singers, schoolstudents were among hundreds of people from all walks of life who participated, apart from Bangladeshi officials and their family members.

The procession named "Ananda Sobhajatra" was organised by the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh here.

"In recognition of Bangladesh as a developing nation by the United Nations Committee for Development Policy, the event is held in around 80 Bangladeshi diplomatic missions across the world," Bangladesh's Assistant High Commissioner Shakhawat Hossain said.

Renowned Indian academician Arunoday Saha, noted dramatists and players Subhash Das and Sisir Deb, prominent singer Rita Chakraborty were among the participants.

Hossain said Bangladesh was dubbed a developing country since it had fulfilled three stipulated criteria -- per capita income, human resource development and economic upliftment -- of UNCDP rather than a least developed country.

"... in the success and independence of Bangladesh, India too has played a great and historic role," the envoy told the media here.

A panel discussion was held at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here to highlight Bangladesh's success in various human and economic indexes.
