Massive protests erupted in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district on Monday after residents alleged that security forces tortured four people during a search operation to nab separatist guerrillas hiding in the area.

A large number of people assembled outside the district magistrate's office demanding action over the incident.

Some protesters pelted stones at the army camp in Chuntimullah village in the district, 70 km north of Srinagar.

Police used tear gas shells to disperse the angry protesters. However, protests were continuing in the area.

Residents allege that four people, including a woman, were tortured by security forces. The four were later taken to the district hospital.

Police said they have sent an investigation team to the village to verify the allegation.
