Punjab Governor urges for 100 per cent voting

Asking voters to exercise their franchise, Punjab Governor V.P. Singh Badnore on Wednesday called upon the youth of the state to enthusiastically participate in the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab by ensuring 100 per cent voting.

Addressing a gathering to mark the National Voters' Day celebrations on the Punjabi University campus in Patiala, Badnore said that youth should participate willingly in electing their government as they are going to make future policies.

"Enrolment of 18 to 19 year age group has always been a matter of concern. Youth often ignore the importance of their registration in electoral roll. But this time 40 per cent of total voters of this age group have been enrolled which is a remarkable progress compared with the 10 to 15 per cent a few years ago. There is a need to further encourage the future voters to get registered as voters," Badnore said.

Assembly elections to 117 seats take place on February 4 to decide the fate of the new government in Punjab.

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer V.K. Singh said that involvement of youth in elections is a must.

"As many as 3.43 lakh new voters in the age group 18-19 years have been registered in our electoral rolls as on January 1, 2017, out of 1.97 crore of total voters," Singh pointed out.

There are 1,146 candidates in the fray this time.
