Rahul, Jyoti emerge winners in Mumbai Half Marathon

Rahul Kumar Pal and Jyoti Chauhan emerged champions in the men's and women's category, respectively, of the inaugural Mumbai Half Marathon 2016 held here on Sunday.

In the men's Half Marathon (21.1 kilometre), Rahul won the title with a timing of 1:04:28 while Kalidas Hirave was the runner-up clocking 1:04:31, followed by Damor Mohanbhai at 1:05:01.

In the women's Half Marathon, Jyoti won the title clocking 1:28:25, while Seema was runner-up with a time of 1:29:32.

The race started from Karmaveer Bhaurao Patel Marg and finished near University Road (Oval Maidan) and covered prominent historical landmarks in South Mumbai, including the Gateway of India.

In the men's 10km run event, Parshuram Bhoi won the race with Dinesh Gurunath Mhatre claiming the second position and Amit Bhagwan Mali coming in third.

In the women's 10km run, Aarti Survase secured the top spot, followed by Priyanka Navkudkar and Arpita Nagraja.

Over 15,000 participants took to the streets of Mumbai, participating in the inaugural edition.

Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar flagged off all the three races, cheering on the participants.

Tendulkar, the face of Mumbai Half Marathon said in a release: "This is a massive day for Mumbai. It is a great initiative by IDBI Federal Life Insurance to promote something which will have a positive impact on the common man as far as health and lifestyle is concerned."

"The participants here today are our heroes, to be able to do what they did requires a lot of discipline, dedication, planning and execution. I am looking forward to the vibrancy in the Delhi and Kolkata editions as well."

Nagraj Adiga, race director said: "It's been an immense pleasure being a part of this inaugural edition of the Mumbai Half Marathon. It is heartening to see such a massive number of health conscious Mumbaikars come out and participate in this marathon, we hope to see many more come and join us next year."
