Red Cross to provide $320,000 to North Korea for flood victims

The Red Cross plans to provide 299,744 Swiss francs ($320,000) of emergency funding for North Korea to support the nation's flood victims.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said on its website Thursday that the IFRC's disaster relief emergency fund worth 299,744 Swiss francs was allocated to support North Korea's Red Cross Society in "delivering immediate assistance to 5,000 families or 20,000 beneficiaries", reported Xinhua.

Torrential rains since early July have caused severe floods and landslides in North Korea, killing 33 people and leaving two injured and 18 missing, according to the IFRC data.

About 4,000 families were estimated to have lost their homes, 11,377 dwellings have been submerged and 50,000 people have been displaced.

In response to the emergency, the agency mobilised its national disaster response teams to the most affected areas to assess damage and needs.
