Brazilian experts say the reduction of the Chinese army recently announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping shows China's desire for peace.

Carlos Tavares, founder of the Brazilian Institute for China and Asia-Pacific Studies, praised Xi's decision, Xinhua news agency reported.

"It is a declaration of peace to the entire world, anchored by the pacifist decision to reduce the army by 300,000 soldiers. Furthermore, allowing 300,000 people back into the job market shows the Chinese economy is doing well," Tavares said.

"Making the announcement during the parade to commemorate Chinese people's victory over Japanese aggression and in World War II shows that China opposes warfare and will not invade other countries," Tavares said

His opinion was backed by Paulo Wrobel, a researcher with the Brazilian think tank BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Policy Centre.

"It was a very timely announcement as it coincided with the large military parade through which China showed its strength. This allowed the Asian country to show that it has sufficient strength to safeguard its own security and defend world peace," Wrobel said.

The fact that the reduction of the army was announced during the parade, Wrobel said "shows China's desire for peace and to contribute to peace around the world".
