Beating the previous record of 81, India will send its largest ever contingent of 90 athletes to this year's Rio Olympics, scheduled from August 5 to 21.
"About 90 athletes have qualified for Olympics in Rio. India will send the largest ever contingent this year," Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, while replying on behalf of Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, informed the Lok Sabha during Question Hour on Tuesday.
Rijiju said 58 sports persons have qualified for individual events while 32 hockey players -- both men and women -- have also qualified to participate the Olympics.
The minister further said that the sports ministry has provided special assistance to athletes for training both in India and abroad.
