Sanskrit to be offered in Class 11 in KVs next year

Sanskrit will be offered as one of the options in lieu of an elective subject in Class 11 from the 2015-16 session in all Kendriya Vidyalayas having senior secondary classes, an official statement said Monday.

In a circular dated Dec 5 which was shared with the media Monday, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) said article 108 of the KVS education code - stipulating the scheme of studies for various classes - has a provision for study of Sanskrit or Hindi or English as a compulsory core language for classes 11 and 12.

It said the decision was taken in the 99th meeting of the Board of Governors of the Kendriya Vidyalayas held Oct 27.

"The board approved the proposal to offer teaching of Sanskrit language in Class 11 from the session 2015-16 in all the Kendriya Vidyalayas having senior secondary classes," the KVS said in a statement.

"Sanskrit will be offered as one of the options in lieu of an elective subject. For this, teachers may be appointed initially on contract basis," it added.

At present, 1,102 Kendriya Vidyalayas are functioning under the KVS, including three abroad.
