Sidhu gets case registered against builders of collapsed building

Punjab's Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday inspected the site of a building collapse and got a case registered against the builders responsible for the construction of an illegal building.

The incident of building collapse took place in Peer Muchhalla area in Zirakpur area of Punjab, adjoining Chandigarh.

Sidhu, who took a serious note of the incident, went to the police station in the area to get the case registered. He handed over all the documents pertaining to the building to SSP (senior superintendent of police) Mohali, Kuldeep Chahal.

No casualty was reported in the collapse of the buildings which took place last Thursday (April 12).

"As per the record of the department, out of the six collapsed buildings (No. 139 to 144) the licence of five buildings had expired in October 2017 while that of the remaining building expired on March 31, 2018 which makes it clear that the builders had constructed the buildings without certified licence," Sidhu told media.

The minister said the builders were constructing flats without approval because the approval was accorded for houses and not flats.

He said that he had asked for the registration of a case against the builders under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for violating the Punjab Municipal Act 2011 building bye-laws.

He said that a probe was being conducted into the entire matter and no one found guilty would be spared.

Sidhu said that he has decided to conduct a tour of the state to inspect all the buildings and ensure that no building is being constructed without proper approval and licence.
