The pilot of a small plane died when the aircraft crashed in the US state of Texas Thursday, a media report said.

The crash occurred as the pilot attempted to land at a local airport in Amarillo, about 850 km north of Texas's largest city of Houston, Xinhua reported citing ABC13 TV channel.

The plane crashed into a yard by a mobile home. The pilot died at the scene and there was no report of injuries on the ground. The identity of the victim has not been released.

It was not immediately known what caused the crash. The National Weather Service said Amarillo faced thunderstorms Thursday morning with wind gusts topping 32 km per hour.
