A soldier was killed when he accidentally fired on himself from his service weapon while on guard duty in Jammu district on Monday, a defence official said.

"Rifleman Chander Mohan Sharma of 28 Rashtriya Rifles died of accidental discharge from his service rifle at 6.15 a.m. while on protection duty," a defence spokesman said here.

Sharma's body has been sent to his ancestral village in Akhnoor where the last rites will be held on Tuesday, the spokesman said, adding the soldier had just returned from leave and his tenure in RR was over.
