La Liga football club Cordoba sacked coach Miroslav Djukic in the wake of the side's 0-2 defeat to Malaga at the weekend.

The defeat was Cordoba's eighth in a row and left the Spanish club rooted to the bottom of La Liga with just 18 points from 27 games, seven points from safety with just 11 matches left to play, reports Xinhua.

Djukic, who has previously coached Valladolid and Valencia, took over the club on October 20, 2014, after Albert Ferrer, the coach who led Cordoba to promotion last season, had been unable to oversee a single win in the opening eight games of the campaign. Coincidentally Ferrer was also sacked after losing to Malaga (1-2 at home).

Djukic's term began well as his side beat Granada and Rayo Vallecano and also won away to Athletic Club Bilbao. But after a home draw against Eibar in early January, they have failed to take another point.

The club thanked Djukic for his work and said that B-team coach Jose Antonio Romero will take over the running of the first team on a temporary basis. Romero will presumably be in-charge for Cordoba's next game which is a difficult trip to face Real Sociedad next Sunday.
