Violence marred a law violation programme undertaken by the Socialist Unity Centre of India Communist (SUCI-C) here Thursday against price rise and alleged anti-people policies of the state and the central governments.

The SUCI(c) claimed 60 of its activists were injured in a baton charge by the police. Police, however, denied any incident of baton charge.

"police baton-charged us without any provocation, injuring 60 of our cadres," the party's state committee member Pranati Bhattacharya told IANS.

She said seven of the injured were admitted to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in serious condition.

"We are protesting the price rise hitting common man everyday as well as the inhumane land ordinance act. Also, the 100 days of work policy is in our agenda", she said.

Bhattacharya said, SUCI(C) was also protesting against the state government's policies on multi-crore Sarada scam. She demanded that the money people deposited with the chit fund company be paid back immediately to the investors.

A police officer claimed that there was no baton charge as the party did not resort to any law violation, so the question of any injury or arrest did not arise.
