A suspected suicide bomber was killed on Monday after blowing himself up near the US consulate in Saudi Arabia's Jeddah city, officials said.

Two security officers were injured "as a result of the failed bombing", Al Jazeera reported.

Local media reports said the attacker parked his car outside a mosque opposite the consulate and shortly afterwards detonated his device after being tackled by security guards.

The Jeddah consulate was the scene of a militant attack in 2004, which left nine people dead.
