T. Venkatesh, a 1988 batch IAS officer, has been appointed the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh, which is headed for assembly elections early next year, an official said on Saturday.
Venkatesh, who replaces Arun Singhal as the CEO of the state, has a clean image and is perceived to have a proactive attitude at work.
He was Divisional Commissioner of Lucknow before his appointment as the CEO.
Venkatesh will shoulder the onerous responsibility of conducting elections in India's most populous state that has as many as 403 assembly constituencies.
The Election Commission has already started work on revision of voter lists in Uttar Pradesh.
